July is a month where we lift the voices of a too often marginalized segment of our community and shine the spotlight on that aspect of human diversity we call disability. It is Disability Pride Month as we mark the anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in July 1990.
WindSwell Foundation has worked with each of you, since 2007, to provide an accessible community for those in our region who are, or may someday, be in that spotlight. With our grantees and collaborative partners, we have created something worthy of the national (and a little international) attention we have received. However, sometimes it is the “forest for the trees” scenario and it can be that fresh set of eyes that can recognized accomplishments.
Visit Fort Wayne, wanted to tell our city’s story about accessibility. They wanted to let groups, individuals and families know how welcoming we are for those potential visitors who were searching for that vacation spot that would be accommodating for everyone in their family. That new perspective saw what our community has nurtured, what was built to include everyone, and that what we aspired to provide for those with disabilities in Northeast Indiana, would be something desired by others.
We have much to be proud of as we have supported the needs of students with disabilities from early childhood education to post-secondary experiences and everything in between.
…as we have contributed to playgrounds and parks from the pocket park at the end of the street to showplaces of distinction.
…as we have educated and collaborated around universal design for festivals and community events that would be inviting to everyone.
…as we have created a region filled with sporting events, activities, volunteer experiences, arts performances and educational destinations that are welcoming and prepared for each of us.
…as we have ensured museums, parks, Y’s, theaters and a world class zoo have opened their doors and cleared the path for all.
Whether trains or airport; curling or goal ball; music performer or dancer; carousel or rodeo horses;….there is a spot waiting for anyone!
